A brain injury takes something away from each person whose life it touches. Their life will be forever changed. It often causes those with the injury to feel "less than", frustrated, angry, and even depressed or alone. Brain-injured persons often feel "different". Bridge to Independence day program is a community-based program providing a supportive, goal-directed, and stimulating environment for people living with brain injury from trauma, tumor, or stroke. It is a place where members can be empowered, motivated, and encouraged as they continue healing. Peer mentoring, which provides acceptance and understanding from both peers and staff, is often key to progress.
Some of the many services available at Bridge to Independence include: supportive groups, computer cognitive skills training, independent living skills training, art & music therapy, social skills training, physical exercise program, gardening opportunities, and community-based field trips. The program facilities are located in a peaceful country setting.
Our Day Program Coordinator, a Licensed Occupational Therapist, plans not only our day-to-day program, but provides individual assessments and service plans. Several of our staff are certified Brain Injury Specialists. Additionally, we work with students from various universities and educational institutions to allow for a broadening of the program's strength and to increase the quality of the members' experience with the application of the most recent research and study.
We exist to support each member's growth, improvement, and progress in their independence and community integration. We all work daily to help them create a life of higher quality with more joy and meaning. As one of our members recently stated, "This is the place I get my support — where people really understand and care about me."
At Bridge to Independence, life is not about being different, it's about making a difference and giving each member the power to do just that.
